How Much Do Breast Implants Cost in Los Angeles?

The older version of this article gave a broad $5,000 to $10,000 California estimate. That is no longer precise enough for a useful Los Angeles guide. A better comparison separates the surgeon fee from the actual all-in surgical quote and explains why two patients can receive different prices.

What Does Breast Augmentation Actually Cost?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports a 2024 projected surgeon or physician fee of $4,575 to $8,000 for breast augmentation with implants. That is national context, not an all-in surgery price.

An all-in quote may include the implant, surgeon, anesthesia, accredited operating facility, medical testing, prescriptions, postoperative garments and follow-up care. Geography and combined procedures also affect the total.

What Should Be Included in a Breast Implant Quote?

A low headline price can be misleading if major costs are added later. Ask whether the quote includes the implants, surgeon fee, anesthesiologist, operating-room fee, preoperative testing, postoperative garments, routine follow-up and medications.

Also ask what happens financially if you later need revision surgery. Cosmetic health insurance usually does not cover the original augmentation, and it may not cover future removal or replacement even when an implant problem occurs.

Saline vs. Silicone: What Is the Difference?

Both FDA-approved implant categories have a silicone outer shell. The difference is what fills the shell.

Saline implants

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. If the shell fails, the implant usually deflates and the saline is absorbed by the body. For cosmetic augmentation, saline implants are FDA-approved for patients age 18 and older.

Silicone implants

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel and often feel more like natural breast tissue, especially when there is less natural tissue covering the implant. For cosmetic augmentation, silicone implants are FDA-approved for patients age 22 and older.

Silicone rupture can be “silent,” meaning the breast may not visibly deflate. That is why long-term imaging matters.

How Do Size, Width and Profile Affect the Result?

Implant volume in cubic centimeters is only one part of the decision. Two implants with the same volume can look different if one is wider and lower-profile while the other is narrower and projects farther forward.

A surgeon also considers breast width, chest-wall shape, skin stretch, nipple position, existing breast tissue and desired upper-pole fullness. Choosing by cup size alone is unreliable because bra sizing is not standardized.

Above or Below the Muscle?

Implants can be placed above the pectoral muscle or partly or fully beneath it. There is no universal best pocket.

Placement affects implant coverage, animation with chest-muscle contraction, recovery, visibility of implant edges and how the implant interacts with existing breast tissue. The pocket should be chosen after examining your chest and tissue, not from a trend.

Do You Need Implants, a Breast Lift, or Both?

Breast implants add volume. They do not reliably correct significant breast sagging.

If the nipple and breast tissue sit low on the chest, simply using a larger implant can create a larger breast without correcting the position. A breast lift may be needed instead of, or together with, augmentation.

What Are the Main Risks of Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation is common surgery, but implants are medical devices and complications are possible. Risks include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, pain, implant malposition, rippling, capsular contracture, rupture or deflation, and the need for another operation.

The FDA also recognizes rare implant-associated cancers. BIA-ALCL is a lymphoma that occurs more often in patients with textured implants than with smooth implants. The FDA has also received reports of squamous cell carcinoma and other lymphomas arising in the capsule around breast implants.

Some patients report systemic symptoms often called “breast implant illness,” including fatigue, joint or muscle pain and cognitive symptoms. These are real patient reports, but individual risk and the exact biological relationship are not yet fully established.

How Are Silicone Implants Monitored?

Because silicone rupture can occur without obvious symptoms, the FDA recommends ultrasound or MRI beginning about 5 to 6 years after silicone implant placement, then every 2 to 3 years after that for patients without symptoms.

If symptoms develop, or if ultrasound findings are uncertain, MRI may be recommended. Your surgeon should give you a long-term monitoring plan before surgery.

How Long Is Breast Augmentation Recovery?

Recovery depends on implant placement, whether a lift is added, your job and your healing response. Soreness, tightness, swelling and temporary changes in breast or nipple sensation are common early on.

Many patients with desk-based work return in about a week. Adonis currently lists a typical desk-work return of 5 to 7 days for straightforward augmentation. Strenuous upper-body activity and heavy lifting stay restricted longer and should restart only after surgeon clearance.

Implants can sit high at first. Swelling decreases over the following weeks, and the breasts continue to soften and settle over several months.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

A good candidate is generally healthy enough for elective surgery, has realistic goals, and understands the long-term responsibilities of having an implanted medical device.

A surgeon should assess breast width, skin quality, nipple position, asymmetry, tissue thickness, chest shape and pregnancy plans. Smoking and nicotine use are especially important because they can increase surgical and wound-healing risk.
