Dermal Filler Comparison
Juvéderm vs. Restylane: Which Filler Fits Which Area?
Juvéderm and Restylane are not two individual fillers. They are two families of hyaluronic acid products with different formulations for lips, cheeks, folds, chin, jawline, temples and under-eye hollows. The useful question is not which brand is better. It is which specific product fits the anatomy, treatment area and result you want.
Neither Juvéderm nor Restylane is universally better. Both families include FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers, but individual products differ substantially in firmness, flexibility, cohesivity, approved treatment areas and expected duration. Choose the product for the anatomical job, not the logo on the syringe.
The biggest mistake:
Comparing the two brands as if every Juvéderm gel behaves one way and every Restylane gel behaves another. Modern filler science is product-specific, not simply brand-specific.
Juvéderm and Restylane are both established hyaluronic acid filler families, but each contains products designed for different depths, facial regions and types of correction. A lip filler, cheek filler and jawline filler should not be expected to behave the same way simply because they share a brand name.
What Is the Difference Between Juvéderm and Restylane?
Juvéderm is manufactured by Allergan Aesthetics and includes products made with different gel technologies, including Hylacross and Vycross. Restylane is manufactured by Galderma and includes products based on NASHA and XpresHAn technologies.
These manufacturing differences affect the physical behavior of individual gels, but the common internet shortcut that “Juvéderm is smooth and Restylane is firm” is too simplistic.
Published rheology studies show substantial differences in elasticity, viscosity and tissue behavior among individual HA fillers. A 2024 review likewise emphasized that each facial region may benefit from different rheological characteristics. A flexible gel may be useful in a highly mobile area, while a more supportive gel may be selected when structural projection is the goal.
That means Restylane Kysse and Restylane Lyft should not be treated as the same type of filler simply because both carry the Restylane name. The same is true of Juvéderm Volbella and Juvéderm Volux.
Juvéderm vs. Restylane by Treatment Area
| Treatment goal | Juvéderm options with relevant FDA indications | Restylane options with relevant FDA indications |
|---|---|---|
| Lip augmentation | Ultra XC, Volbella XC | Restylane / Restylane-L, Silk, Kysse |
| Perioral lines | Volbella XC | Silk, Kysse |
| Smile lines and facial folds | Vollure XC, Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC | Restylane / Restylane-L, Lyft, Refyne, Defyne |
| Cheek and midface volume | Voluma XC | Lyft, Contour |
| Chin augmentation | Voluma XC | Lyft, Defyne |
| Jawline definition | Volux XC | No directly equivalent Restylane jawline indication in the current U.S. labeling |
| Under-eye hollows | Volbella XC | Eyelight |
| Temple hollowing | Voluma XC | Contour |
FDA approval is product- and area-specific. A provider may sometimes discuss an off-label use based on clinical judgment, but that should be distinguished from an FDA-approved indication rather than presented as though every filler in a family is approved everywhere on the face.
Which Is Better for Lips?
There is no single Juvéderm-versus-Restylane answer because both families contain more than one lip product.
Juvéderm Ultra XC is FDA-approved for lip and perioral augmentation and is often considered when visible volume is part of the goal. Juvéderm Volbella XC is approved for lip augmentation and perioral lines and is commonly selected when refinement and fine-line correction matter.
On the Restylane side, Restylane Kysse is approved for lip augmentation and upper perioral lines. Restylane Silk is also approved for lip augmentation and perioral wrinkles. Classic Restylane and Restylane-L also carry lip-enhancement indications.
The better choice depends on existing lip volume, border definition, tissue thickness, movement, previous filler and whether the goal is subtle refinement or more obvious projection.

Which Is Better for Cheeks?
Juvéderm Voluma XC is the principal Juvéderm structural cheek product. Its FDA indication includes deep injection in the cheek area for correction of age-related volume loss. With optimal treatment, manufacturer clinical data report results lasting up to two years in the cheeks.
Restylane offers more than one midface option. Restylane Lyft is approved for cheek augmentation and age-related midface contour deficiency. Restylane Contour is approved for cheek augmentation and correction of midface contour deficiencies.
Neither brand automatically creates a more natural result. Product choice, amount, placement depth and the injector’s understanding of the patient’s skeletal and soft-tissue anatomy are more important than the family name.
What About the Chin and Jawline?
For the chin, Juvéderm Voluma XC has an FDA-approved chin augmentation indication. Restylane Lyft and Restylane Defyne also have FDA-approved indications for improving chin profile in appropriate patients.
The jawline is a clearer point of differentiation. Juvéderm Volux XC is specifically FDA-approved to improve moderate to severe loss of jawline definition in adults over 21. FDA clinical information states that results may last up to 12 months.
This does not mean every jawline should receive filler. Jowling caused by tissue descent, skin laxity or submental fullness can require a different treatment strategy altogether.
Which Is Better for Under-Eye Hollows?
Both families now have products specifically approved for infraorbital hollowing.
Restylane Eyelight received FDA approval for improvement of under-eye hollowing in adults over 21. The FDA’s approval summary reported results lasting up to 12 months in the pivotal study.
Juvéderm Volbella XC is also FDA-approved for improvement of under-eye hollows.
Under-eye treatment is not appropriate for every patient with dark circles or bags. Pigmentation, visible vessels, fluid retention, prominent fat pads, skin laxity and cheek anatomy can all create an under-eye shadow that filler will not necessarily improve.
A 2026 Update: Both Families Now Have Temple Options
Juvéderm Voluma XC is FDA-approved for augmentation of moderate to severe temple hollowing in adults over 21.
Restylane Contour received an expanded FDA indication in March 2026 for correction of temple hollowing. The updated labeling also includes device-specific provider training requirements when Contour is used for this indication.
This is an important example of why filler comparisons should be updated regularly. FDA indications change as manufacturers complete additional clinical studies.
Does Juvéderm Last Longer Than Restylane?
Not as a universal rule.
Juvéderm products have reported durations ranging from about one year to two years depending on the exact product and treatment area. For example, Voluma cheek results may last up to two years with optimal treatment, while Volux jawline results may last up to one year.
Restylane durations are also product- and area-specific. Manufacturer clinical data report Kysse lip results up to one year, Defyne and Refyne fold correction up to one year, Restylane Contour cheek results up to 18 months, and Eyelight results up to 18 months with optimal treatment in company-reported clinical data.
These figures come from different clinical studies and should not be interpreted as direct head-to-head proof that one brand lasts longer than another.
Does Restylane Cause Less Swelling?
There is not enough evidence to assign a simple “low swelling” label to the entire Restylane family or a “moderate swelling” label to the entire Juvéderm family.
Swelling depends on the product, treatment location, volume injected, technique, tissue characteristics and individual inflammatory response. Lips commonly swell more than areas such as the cheeks regardless of brand.
Both families can cause temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, redness, firmness and lumps or bumps after injection.
Are Juvéderm and Restylane Safe?
FDA-approved Juvéderm and Restylane products have undergone clinical review for specific indications. That does not make dermal filler risk-free.
The FDA identifies unintended injection into a blood vessel as the most serious filler complication. Vascular occlusion can cause tissue necrosis and, in rare cases, vision abnormalities including blindness, stroke or other serious injury.
An experienced injector can reduce risk through anatomical knowledge, product selection and technique and can be better prepared to recognize and manage a complication. No injector can honestly promise that vascular occlusion is completely preventable.
Both Juvéderm and Restylane are HA fillers, so hyaluronidase can often be used to reduce or dissolve HA if medically appropriate. Hyaluronidase use specifically for cosmetic filler dissolution is itself an off-label use and does not guarantee perfect restoration of the pre-treatment appearance.

Current Skin Works Pricing
Current standard Torrance pricing from the September 2026 Skin Works price list shows substantial overlap between the two families:
| Juvéderm | Current price | Restylane | Current price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra XC | $600 | Restylane | $600 |
| Ultra Plus XC | $650 | Restylane Silk | $650 |
| Volbella XC | $750 | Restylane Defyne | $680 |
| Vollure XC | $750 | Restylane Refyne | $680 |
| Volux XC | $750 | Restylane Lyft | $700 |
| Voluma XC | $880 | Restylane Eyelight | $700 |
| Restylane Kysse | $750 | ||
| Restylane Contour | $750 |
Price should come after product selection, not before it. Two syringes of an inexpensive filler that does not suit the anatomy can cost more than one well-selected syringe. Current first-visit pricing and financing information are available on the Skin Works dermal filler page.
A Better Way to Choose Between Them
| Question | What should guide the choice |
|---|---|
| What area am I treating? | Start with products that are designed and, when possible, FDA-approved for that anatomical area. |
| Do I want volume or structural support? | Different gels provide different amounts of projection, flexibility and tissue integration. |
| How much does the area move? | Highly mobile areas such as the lips may require different properties than a cheek or chin. |
| Is filler actually the right treatment? | Skin laxity, pigment, scars and tissue descent may need another treatment rather than additional volume. |
| How important is duration? | Compare the actual duration evidence for the specific product and area, not the brand average. |
| Has the injector used both families? | An injector familiar with several formulations can select by anatomy instead of forcing every patient into one preferred brand. |
If the consultation begins with “Juvéderm or Restylane?” before anyone has assessed your anatomy, the question is backwards. First identify the tissue problem and treatment goal. Then choose the filler whose properties and approved use fit that job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Juvéderm better than Restylane?
No brand is universally better. Both families contain several distinct HA fillers. The better product depends on the area, anatomy, desired amount of structure or flexibility, FDA indication and injector technique.
Which is better for lips, Juvéderm or Restylane?
Both have FDA-approved lip products. Juvéderm Ultra XC and Volbella XC and Restylane Kysse, Silk and Restylane-L are among the options. The appropriate choice depends on whether the goal is volume, border definition, perioral lines or subtle refinement.
Which is better under the eyes?
Juvéderm Volbella XC and Restylane Eyelight both have FDA-approved indications for under-eye hollowing. Candidacy matters because not every under-eye shadow is caused by volume loss.
Which filler lasts longer?
Duration is product- and area-specific. Voluma can last up to two years in the cheeks, while many other Juvéderm and Restylane products have clinical duration closer to six, twelve or eighteen months. The studies are not interchangeable.
Can Juvéderm and Restylane be dissolved?
Both are hyaluronic acid filler families, so hyaluronidase can often be used to reduce HA filler when clinically appropriate. Filler dissolution is not guaranteed to restore the exact pre-treatment appearance, and hyaluronidase use for cosmetic filler reversal is off-label.
Does Restylane swell less than Juvéderm?
There is no reliable family-wide rule. Swelling depends on the specific formulation, treatment area, dose, injection technique and individual response.
Can I use Juvéderm in one area and Restylane in another?
Yes. A treatment plan does not need to remain loyal to one brand. Different products can be selected for different anatomical needs when the provider believes that approach is appropriate.
